American Civil War
This section forms the core of the HDGM. The 5th Virginia Infantry is recreated in the period between 1860 and 1865. The 5th Virginia came from the Shenandoah Valley, where the Germans made up an extremely high proportion of the population.
As part of our impression, we move according to the anniversaries of the events of this conflict, i.e. in 2024 we represent the year 1864, 2026 begins again in 1861, etc. This makes it necessary for members to acquire at least two uniforms over time to be dressed correctly for that year.
Newcomers receive a brochure that provides information about the regimental history, literature and, above all, sources for the best equipment.
Some members also have Union equipment, so that we can support the balance of power at reenactments depending on the event.
In addition to the “fighting” troops, the appearance of this section of the HDGM is enriched by authentic civilians, such as sutlers and ladies, who are appropriately integrated into the action depending on the period depicted.
